Bicycle & Traffic Safety

Grade: Fourth

When: All Year Long – 30-minute class   

This is the first of a two-part lesson to help students gear up for riding safety, focusing on equipment, and riding practices on pathways and roads.

The unit covers the benefits of cycling, checking and fitting bikes and helmets, and riding safely on streets and shared pathways.

This classroom lesson begins with an introduction to the health and environmental benefits of cycling. Students learn proper helmet and bike fit and how to check a bicycle for safety.

The class also covers key traffic laws and best practices for staying alert and riding predictably and responsibly. This class is a prerequisite for the Bike Rodeo.
