Students crossing street at crosswalk

Walk Around the Block

Grade: Second

When: All Year Long – 30-minute class

This is the second of a two-part class that teaches students how to walk safely along sidewalks and how to cross the street. This unit serves as an introduction to the safe practices that students will learn throughout elementary school and beyond.

Walk Around the Block takes students on a miniature walking field trip along quiet streets near school. Students practice crossing the street in small groups, both in crosswalks and mid-block when no crosswalks are available. Instructors teach students to use “stop, look and listen” at all “edges.” Edges include curbs, driveways, between parked cars, and bushes that limit visibility when walking on the sidewalk.

The prerequisite class is Stop, Look and Listen.
